Unknown to most of the people, so too for me … in these five months I will try as much as possible to know this place and transmit the secrets hidden in every corner of this beautiful island.
Lefkada belongs to the Ionian Islands, an archipelago located in the Ionian Sea, in Greece. They are called the “SevenIslands” … interestingly there are seven islands in the CanaryIsland too! In addition to the seven main islands this archipelago includes many small islands. The main islands are Corfu (Kerkyra), Paxos, Lefkas (Lefkada), Ithaca, Cephalonia (Kefalonia) and Zante (Zakynthos).
Lefkas or Lefkada is the fourth largest of the Ionian Islands. Its capital has the same name of the island, is a small town built around its natural harbor. It is the administrative, economic and cultural development of Lefkada.
It is a different island, we can be reached by car or bus (guagua). It is linked to the mainland by a narrow bridge that allows easy access by road. At the entrance of the harbor a small square filled with trees welcomes to the visitors and gives the city a lively and friendly atmosphere.
I have been living here only for a week but I can share a couple of things I can point out. No doubt, the first thing that caught my attention when I arrived to the country was the language. See almost all written in Greek … understand that it is normal at first impact. I think this topic deserves its own article … talk about this in future articles!.
When I arrived to the island it was raining, but it seems that little by little is noticing the arrival of good weather. Today we enjoy a nice sunny day. This has a great influence on the island. In winter it is very cold and raining. People go out shortly and the days seem more sad because businesses are closed. These days are beginning to open many sites and bars begin to pull their tables and chairs for customers terraces begin to enjoy the sun. There are many differences of life in the months of cold and heat on the island. The winters are cold and summers are too hot.
Another thing I noticed upon arrival on the island has been the large number of cats there, apparently the Greeks in general love the cats. We can find cats even in the shops! I’ve seen one on countertops … But not so with dogs … I have learned that the Greeks did not feel much love for dogs. But many are homeless, who are outside of shops, pharmacies, bars. But they don´t look bad, no one would say they are homeless … I want to find out more about this!
Upon reaching the island I have also noticed a significant chaos on the road. No doubt, what most caught my attention was to see old people driving their bicycles, this is very normal here. Seeing elderly people by bicycle holding his cane, is something that I have seen here. Overall, the bike is much used and motorbikes to get around town. This is perfect because the city is flat … the helmet does not seem to exist! I have not yet seen anyone wearing it. No one uses the seat belt in the cars, they are surprised when you use it and even they can ask you: Don´t you trust in me?.
I only took a week on the island and it is impossible not to discover it curiosities. I will try to convey all that I know of this heavenly place …. the adventure has just begun!
