One of the best things that a EVS program have, is the possibility to work with the youngsters of your host country. When I arrived at Sri Lanka, I thought I was going to spend lot of time alone, and that I should have a lot of books to keep my mind busy. Nothing could be more untrue, the two first months I missed so much having a group of friends with which I can hang around, go on party or just talk about Young people things.
After the Multiplier Course that we gave for the youngsters of the Madurawala village, everything changed. Around 16 youngsters came, and some of them ask me for English conversation classes. Nowadays I am meeting a group of 7 young girls and boys for 3 hours everyday to have English classes, but also to talk about our countries, the cultural differences, our ambitions, our concerns… we watch films, have some snacks, and we sometimes go to the river to have a pleasant bath.
Take the decision of being separate of your friends for more than 5 moths, is not easy. We are used to live surrounded by the people we select as our friends. I thought that it was going to be impossible to find a new group of friends where I could feel comfortable, and make my experience in Sri Lanka absolutely happy. But thanks to all the activities of the EVS related with youngsters, I am now missing a little less, my life in Spain.
